  1. Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.

When Jesus had fasted 40 days and 40 nights, afterward He was hungry.

The devil to Jesus: “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”

Jesus to the devil: “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ”

Deuteronomy 8:3 So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord.

Then the devil took Jesus up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple.

The devil to Jesus: “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written:

‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’

    and,

‘In their hands they shall bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ”

    Psalm 91:11
For He shall give His angels charge over you,
To keep you in all your ways.

    Psalm 91:12
In their hands they shall bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.

Jesus to the devil: “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt (test) the Lord your God.’ ”

    Deuteronomy 6:16
“You shall not tempt the Lord your God as you tempted Him in Massah.

Again, the devil took Jesus up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.

The devil to Jesus: “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.”

Jesus to the devil: “Away with you (Get behind Me), Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ ”

    Deuteronomy 6:13
You shall fear the Lord your God and serve Him, and shall take oaths in His name.

    Deuteronomy 10:20
You shall fear the Lord your God; you shall serve Him, and to Him you shall hold fast, and take oaths in His name.

    Joshua 24:14
“Now therefore, fear the Lord, serve Him in sincerity and in truth, and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the River and in Egypt. Serve the Lord!

Then the devil left Jesus, and angels came and ministered to Him.

    Matthew 4:12-16
12 Now when Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, He departed to Galilee. 13 And leaving Nazareth, He came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali, 14 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying:

    15
“The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,
By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan,
    Galilee of the Gentiles:
    16
The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light,
And upon those who sat in the region and shadow of death
    Light has dawned.”

    Isaiah 9:1-2
    1
Nevertheless the gloom will not be upon her who is distressed,
As when at first He lightly esteemed
The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,
And afterward more heavily oppressed her,
By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan,
    In Galilee of the Gentiles.
    2
The people who walked in darkness
    Have seen a great light;
Those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death,
Upon them a light has shined.

    Isaiah 42:7
    To open blind eyes,
To bring out prisoners from the prison,
Those who sit in darkness from the prison house.

    Luke 2:32
A light to bring revelation to the Gentiles,
And the glory of Your people Israel.”

From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand (has drawn near).”

Jesus, walking by the Sea of Galilee, saw 2 brothers, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.

Jesus to them: “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”

They immediately left their nets and followed Him.

Going on from there, Jesus saw 2 other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets.

Jesus called them, and immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him.

Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease among the people.

Then His fame went throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all sick people who were afflicted with various diseases and torments, and those who were demon-possessed, epileptics, and paralytics; and He healed them.

Great multitudes followed Him—from Galilee, and from Decapolis (Ten Cities), Jerusalem, Judea, and beyond the Jordan.
